An Efficient Treatment for Posttraumatic Injury for Firefighters
Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research, Principal Investigator - Carmen McLean
RELEVANCE
Firefighters experience elevated rates of posttraumatic injury and comorbid sleep problems that can significantly impair occupational functioning yet have little access to evidence-based treatment offered in a format that fits within their work and training schedules. Brief, culturally-adapted evidence-based treatment is needed to help firefighters with posttraumatic injury and sleep problems benefit from effective care.
METHODS
The proposed mixed methods study will involve formative work with fire service stakeholders to adapt the efficient treatment for posttraumatic injury, insomnia, and nightmares to the unique strengths and mental health needs of firefighters. Next, we will conduct a two-arm randomized controlled pilot test (immediate vs 1-month delayed intervention) of the treatment with firefighters to validate the effectiveness of the program and assess acceptability and feasibility.
ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES
Evidence-based treatments for posttraumatic injury, insomnia, and nightmares will be integrated, adapted to the needs of the firefighters, and delivered in an efficient group workshop format. We expect that the demonstrated efficacy, feasibility, and acceptability of the treatment will support the dissemination and implementation of this model throughout the fire service.
