Course Listings - Preliminary Foundations

  • This session will provide foundational concepts and definitions of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), discuss why diversity in fire and emergency services will build a safer society, and introduce participants to the different types of workplace culture. As a result of this session, participants will be able to implement the benefits of an inclusive and diverse workforce as a part of their organizational mission.

  • This session lays the foundations of diversity and helps fire service leaders better understand the historical context of oppression, social exclusion, and privilege. This session focuses on the importance of having more inclusive fire departments that reflect the communities they serve.

  • This session will explore various manifestations of racism and prejudice. Participants will be encouraged to explore the realities of how some past attempts to address differences have been ineffective or harmful and will discuss positive examples and tools.

  • This session will explore gender equity and sexism in the fire service and will give participants tools for a more inclusive environment.

  • This session will investigate the broad spectrum of sexual orientations and identities. This session will discuss education around appropriate language and responsibility related to treating all members with respect.

  • An Active Bystander is a person who witnesses a situation and takes the opportunity to help. This session will encourage and give tips to Active Bystanders to address inappropriate behaviors when they occur

  • This session will brainstorm practices to increase diversity and improve the recruitment and retention of a diverse workforce.
